Sunday’s moderate ride is listed as ‘meet vintage bike run’. This note is to tell you what to expect. Every May, Terry Pearce, a long standing Reading CTC member, organises a ride for a club for collectors and riders of vintage sporting machines. The event assembles at Theale and the riders go to Chievely for their lunch stop. We shall go to Chievely, probably with a coffee stop at ‘The Rain Forest’ and take our lunch at the ‘Old Red Lion’. I think you will find the objects of desire from 50 or 60 years ago of interest. After lunch we shall ride back to Theale where you can inspect the machinery again and perhaps get a cup of tea. From Theale we’ll make our own ways home.

Following last year’s successful club ride, I’m repeating the ride to The Hawkley Inn. We’ll make an early start from The Fountain at Caversham Bridge at 08:30 sharp and pick up any riders that want to meet us at Beech Hill (seat by the common) at about 09:15. Coffee break will be at Redfields GC and some riders may want to meet us there. We’ll ride south into deepest Hampshire to one of the best pubs in the area. There are many tiny (and steep!) lanes to explore on the way. The pub serves really excellent meals and beer (see website), but no bar snacks or baguettes on Sundays. We’ll aim to average around 12mph (20 kph) over the day so if you think that suits you, please join us for a fine day out. It’s a long way so expect to get home around 6pm. Do get in contact if you want to know more (eg. I can provide map and GPS details)

I’ve been passed this from Reading Council.

European Cycle Challenge

1st-31st May 2012

Reading is one of nine European towns/cities participating in a European Cycle Challenge throughout May as part of the wider Local Sustainable Transport Fund programme. The challenge will be aimed at local cycling groups and will be followed by a Workplace Cycle Challenge in June involving local businesses and delivered in partnership with Challenge for Change and CTC.

Participants will log each journey using a GPS tracking system to record transportation trips rather than sport/leisure based trips. They can register on the Endomondo website http://www.endomondo.com/challenges/4370406 where they can download the free mobile phone app.

Prizes will be rewarded for:

•	One raffled for all participants;
•	One for the most miles cycled; and
•	One for the most radical change in travel habits.

The first ten people to register and record a journey will receive a free ‘D’-lock. Prizes will be presented at the Prospect Park Cycle Festival at the end of Bike Week.
